Hi President SA Live Music Club,
Having read your email re the ‘Future of Saturday Sessions’ (forwarded =
on to me by another member), I thought I would provide some feedback in =
the hope that this can be taken positively and may help the current =
situation.
Having been on the executive of several clubs, I can totally relate to =
your frustration, you bust a gut trying to get things happening to =
benefit the club and it’s members, and don’t get the support from =
members to help themselves. I agree the Gov is key to
the success and to lose that relationship would be very detrimental to =
the future of the Club.
Whilst I don’t know the detail, I expect that there are very limited =
numbers on the Club executive and not enough resources to do everything =
that needs doing, a common problem with lots of clubs today.
I thought I might share my story as it may point to the source of some =
of the current challenges.
I became a Member about 4 or 5 years ago, as our band wanted to =
participate in the Club Cool events at the Gov. I renewed my membership =
the next year so the band could again participate in this. (This is so =
rewarding by the way and I don’t think many members
would realise this.)
Then along came COVID and things went quiet. The Club advised by email =
it was extending memberships free for a further 12 months, which was =
great and a positive step.
That is the last communication I received from the Club!
There was no reminder that I needed to pay again, there were no invites =
to anything from the Club. Crickets. It appeared the Club had lost =
interest in me. I am obviously no longer a member but wonder how many =
others had this happen to them?
I could suggest that even as a non- member I would have liked to =
continue to receive emails, as I could be interested in attending the =
Saturday Sessions as an audience member but I had no idea they were back =
on. I could also become aware of other events/opportunities
which may encourage me to rejoin to be able to participate in those. I =
would suggest there are hundreds of ex members who may be interested to =
receive updates. They can always delete an email if not interested, or =
unsubscribe. Also people’s life goes through
phases, and people who may have been members but pulled out due to =
life’s commitments years ago, may now be interested in doing something =
again.
Having an audience is really important to me, and I recall a Saturday =
session where we were the last band to perform. We all rolled up with =
some friends to see the the first band and the whole session, only to =
find that other band’s members and their friends
left after they played and when we finally took to the stage, everyone =
else and their friends had left leaving only a couple of dedicated =
organisers and our friends there. Surprisingly, I was never keen to do =
those sessions again. Maybe bands need to be aware
of this mutual support expectation.
Maybe there could be some more publicity of the sessions? There are =
numerous facebook groups with many thousands of followers on each that =
offer free listings of pub gigs that would get some additional audience. =
I follow these facebook sites and have been to
a number of gigs/sessions I have seen advertised.
Whilst a member, I don’t recall seeing any requests to assist with =
anything to do with the club? Maybe I missed them, but I understand a =
small committee can’t do everything but non-committee members can assist =
with functions/events and admin. I may be worthwhile
asking from time to time.
I wish you all the very best, and really hope the Gov stays working with =
the Club. I hope this email assists in a constructive manner.
Best regards
Martin Barbary
