Newsletter
Hello =
everyone
Everyone has been busy and hence the newsletter has skipped =
September to become Octobers. Apologies but time flies when you’re =
having fun.
There is plenty to go through so make sure you read the =
entire newsletter. There’ll be exams!
Besides the regular mentions of Gig Registrations, and =
events coming up, we announce the inaugural Members =
Workshop, along with a new initiative, a Club House =
Band. In addition, there is an article on Saxophone Mics, in =
addition to an article about a little App, Moises.
Registrations are currently open for the =
October 15th Club Cool and Saturday Session 28th. Upcoming events to be =
opened shortly will be the November Club Cool, the Saturday Sessions, =
plus the Macclesfield Lions Bike Show on November 5th. October =
registrations will start to close before the end of this week ie. Friday =
29th September.

Stage Craft
We have secured The Gallery, at The Gov, for our inaugural =
Members Workshop – Stage Craft. This session will cover =
the gear and set up for PA & sound at your gig or band practice. The =

House Band
=46rom time to time the Club has vacancies for bands at =
regular events that generally either a band has to drop out, or can=E2=80=99=
t be filled otherwise due to absences within bands, illness, holidays, =
etc.
Before we head to the new year 2024, the Club would like to =
start forming a band of members to be on-call to be able to fill a spot =
or support a solo member to be a backing band.
This is not intended to be a Super Band or anything, but =
there is some expectation of playing ability, readiness to adapt to song =
choices, friendliness to others, and looking to have fun.
To be considered, you would need to be generally available =
for any and all of the regular Club events throughout the whole year, =
and by having 2 of instruments this should provide alternate options =
should you be unavailable at a particular time.
=46rom there, they would meet on a regular basis to practice =
and develop a set list of their own, plus cover a few of well known =
songs eg. 3 chord types. This would be up to the band as to rehearsal, =
songs, etc. However, they would need to nominate a representative to =
liaise with the EMU.
The house band would get to play at Club events in their own =
right from time to time eg. Saturday Sessions and Club Cool.
To be considered, you would need to be generally available =
for any and all of the regular Club events throughout the whole year, =
and by having 2 of instruments this should provide alternate options =
should you be unavailable at a particular time.

Saxophone =
Microphones
Liz, from Six In The City, has been doing some digging =
around a microphone for her saxophone. Here is her review, with many =
thanks, Editor.
The choice between a clip-on microphone and a regular =
microphone for a sax or other wind instrument depends on your specific =
needs and preferences. Both types of microphones have their advantages =
and disadvantages, and the best option will vary depending on factors =
such as your playing style, the context in which you’re performing or =
recording, and your budget. Here are some considerations for each =
type:
Clip-On Microphone:
Convenience: Clip-on microphones are =
designed to attach directly to the sax, making them easy to set up and =
position. They allow for hands-free performance and don’t require =
microphone stands.
Feedback Control: Clip-on microphones =
are typically less prone to feedback issues since they are closer to the =
sound source and can be positioned away from the =
speakers.
Mobility: They provide freedom of =
movement, allowing you to move around on stage without being tethered to =
a microphone stand.
Aesthetics: Some musicians prefer =
clip-on microphones because they are less obtrusive and maintain the =
instrument’s visual appearance.
Regular Microphone:
Sound Quality: High-quality regular =
microphones, especially condenser microphones, can capture a broader =
range of frequencies and nuances in your instrument’s sound. They are =
often preferred for studio recordings and critical live =
performances.
Versatility: Regular microphones can =
be used for various instruments and vocals, making them versatile for =
different applications. You can also experiment with different =
microphone placements to achieve different tonal =
characteristics.
Sound Engineer Control: When using a =
regular microphone, a sound engineer can have more control over the =
sound by adjusting the microphone’s placement and settings.
In summary, if you prioritise convenience, feedback =
control, and mobility for live performances, a clip-on microphone may be =
a suitable choice for your sax. On the other hand, if you’re aiming for =
the best possible sound quality and versatility, a high-quality regular =
microphone may be the better option, especially for studio recordings or =
critical live performances where sound quality is paramount. Ultimately, =
the choice should align with your specific needs and the context in =
which you’ll be using the mic.
August Committee meeting =
summary
The SALMC Committee met on the 19th August =
via Zoom.
The financial report from the Treasurer indicated the club =
remains in a good financial state with $13,877 in cash reserves. =
The club generally runs on a break-even basis but it was noted =
that storage costs for the van will have an impact on the balance sheet =
going forward. Also, insurance costs for the van had =
significantly increased.
The club currently has 112 members including 7 Life =
Members. In the past 2 months, 9 new members have joined =
and 2 have not renewed since their membership expired on the 30th =
June.
The main Club activities, Random Jam, Random Bands, Club =
Cool and the Saturday Sessions at the Gov all continue to be well =
patronised and provide great opportunities for club members to interact =
and perform.
The first of what is hoped to be a series of workshops on =
=E2=80=9Cstage craft=E2=80=9D is scheduled to be held at The Gov after =
the September 17th Club Cool. This session will focus on =
Sound Desk management and will use the new Sound Desk purchased by the =
club. Future sessions will be organised if this session is =
well-attended.
The option of setting a single date for renewal of all =
memberships was discussed by the committee but this is not possible =
under the current club Constitution. It was agreed that =
the membership register should shift to an on-line app associated with =
the club website so members can update their own personal information =
and review their membership status.
This year marks 20 years since the club was incorporated and =
the committee is reviewing options to celebrate this event. =
Publication of an e-book or a specific social function were two =
suggestions. Member input these or other options would be =
appreciated.
The next committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for the =
14th October.

Member Fees – =
Reminder
As previously advised, the Committee decided to increase the =
membership fees from $60/year to $65/year effective from the 1st =
July 2023 ie. to $65 for one year, $120 for 2 years and $180 for 3 =
years. The fees have been held for a number of years to $60 given the =
predicament of COVID-19 and membership numbers.
The Joining Fee ($15) will remain unchanged. =
Members whose membership expires on the 30 June 2023 =
will be billed at the existing rate, however the fees will be at the new =
rate as at 1st July, so please pay on time.
It is worthwhile noting that if Membership lapse for more =
than 60 days, then the member would be required to rejoin, and thus pay =
the joining fee.*

A great way to check your progress as both a musician and as =
a band is to record yourselves. A number of bands simply use their =
phones these days, and some come armed with Zoom H4 audio =
recorders.
This gives everyone great feedback and review of your own =
practice as well as the bands.
Save the files and sharing is incredibly easy now with cloud =
storage like The Box, Dropbox, or Google Drive, and stores details of =
the file date so you can look back and notice your improvement.
At some gigs, you may find that the Sound Desk has the =
ability to record to USB drive, and is simply a matter of asking to be =
recorded.
And those videos can be just as useful to catch not only the =
sound but also your stage presence, like where was everyone standing, =
was there dynamics in both your playing and movement, how did the =
lighting show you off or were you hiding/hidden?

Recording
We have been very fortunate to have Lochy, from The Gov, =
record the last couple of Club Cools.
These recordings have been of excellent quality from the =
mixing desk, and displays great sound quality by bands. All inputs from =
the stage are in the mix, including vocals, guitar amps, bass amp, =
drums, and keyboards, to say the least.
The recordings are then passed onto the band representative =
to share their exploits, and to review their own performance.
It is hopeful to continue this at as many gigs as possible =
such that it provides great feedback to members and bands.

Photos and =
Videos
At each event, we endeavour to have photos taken of the =
bands, and later publish a selection on the Club’s Facebook =
page.
To keep the photographer happy, bands should consider their =
persona and showmanship to their best. This could be simply agree on =
what to wear, is it the same colour/style, polish those guitars and =
those dentures. Smile! Have fun and be dynamic.
And please avoid red, certainly in the Venue as it play hell =
with the stage lights and the lenses.

Moises AI =
App
If you are keen to transcribe or, like me, sometimes can’t =
distinguish the likes of bass in a recorded song, I have started to use =
Moises on the iPad. This app allows you to import a file eg. mp3, and it =
will, through some AI algorithm, split instruments. =46rom there you can =
raise or lower the separate instrument to your liking.
This app is available to tablets like your iPad, and =
Androids, as far as I’m aware but check out https://moises.ai/
They have great videos to get you started, and more.
